Tinnitus Management
Tinnitus — that persistent ringing, buzzing, hissing or other noise you hear in your ears or head — can feel isolating, frustrating or overwhelming. At Expression Audiology, we recognise tinnitus as more than just a sound: it’s something that can affect your wellbeing, sleep, concentration and peace of mind
Tinnitus is a physical condition in which a sound is perceived without an external source. It might be heard in one or both ears, or in the head. The sound may be constant or intermittent, and is often associated with hearing loss or exposure to noise.
Common descriptions include ringing, buzzing, whistling, hissing, clicking, roaring or cicada-like noise. Although tinnitus is not a disease in itself, it is a symptom that signals changes somewhere in the auditory system
How tinnitus management can help you
Our approach is built on Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) and the neurophysiological model, combining counselling, sound enrichment, lifestyle strategies and rehabilitation to help you gradually reduce your reaction to tinnitus.
With the right support, many people move from “suffering” toward “managing” tinnitus — where the sounds may still be present but no longer intrusive.
Key benefits of tinnitus management include:
- Reducing fear and anxiety around tinnitus
- Lessening the distress it causes
- Helping you habituate (become less aware of it)
- Minimising its impact on your quality of life, sleep, concentration and emotional health
Our Tinnitus Management Process
- Assessment & Counselling
We begin with a detailed evaluation — reviewing your hearing, symptoms, lifestyle, and emotional response to tinnitus. Through informational counselling, we demystify tinnitus, dispel fears, and help you understand what is happening neurologically. - Sound Enrichment & Devices
If a hearing loss is present, we may recommend hearing aids to amplify external sounds, which can shift your attention away from tinnitus. We also use sound enrichment (e.g. low-level noise, environmental sounds, sound generators) to help your brain reset its response. - Cognitive & Relaxation Strategies
Strategies such as cognitive therapy can help you develop a healthier relationship with tinnitus. We also integrate relaxation techniques, stress management, sleep strategies and lifestyle adjustments. - Habituation Over Time
The goal is habituation: you may still “hear” tinnitus, but it no longer disturbs your concentration or emotions. This is a gradual process with progress over time. - Ongoing Support & Monitoring
We review your progress regularly, adjust strategies or device settings, and support your long-term management.
Who Benefits & What to Expect
- Even if tinnitus has been ongoing for some time, many people see improvements in how bothersome it feels
- Management does not necessarily eliminate the sound entirely, but helps you live with it more comfortably
- Some individuals may respond more slowly — that’s normal. Progress is non-linear
- Tinnitus can be exacerbated by stress, lack of sleep, noise exposure, some medications, caffeine or certain medical conditions
